Best Bullet Journal Supplies

I can not emphasize this enough – the joy of bullet journaling is that you can make it as simple or as extravagant as you want! Which is what I love about it. Trying out a bullet journal is super easy and you can start off with a few basic supplies and then add more bullet journal supplies to your kit as time goes on and you want to try out more designs.

For the most basic layouts, you really only need a bullet journal and some pens – or even just one pen! But the more colors you have, the more fun your bullet journal will be. If you’re ready to go all-in with your bullet journal, you’ll also want to get a variety of fine tip and brush tip markers, highlighters and anything else to spice up your pages like stickers, washi tape or sticky notes.

Bullet Journals and Notebooks

For most purposes, you’ll want a dot grid notebook to use as a bullet journal. Unless you’re a real free spirit you might choose a totally blank, unlined notebook or sketchbook without the dot grid or any lines. I highly recommend the dot grid and there are so many options out there from plain to sleek to fun plus different types of binding.

Vivid Scribbles Bleedproof Paper Premium Dot Grid Notebook

I love the look of this classic, dot grid notebook. Many of our readers, who are notebook junkies like us, buy 2 or 3 of these in multiple colors. If you’re looking for a gift for a journaling friend, these come pre-packaged in a plain gift box, which makes it perfect.

Dot Grid Spiral Notebooks

For more of a natural or rustic feel, try these softcover dot grid, spiral-bound notebooks. At this price point and at only 40 pages, we would choose these for doodle books, drafts, sketches, or daily to-do lists rather than trying to squeeze in a full year or planner spread.

Dot Grid Wirebound See-Through Cover Notebooks

I love these more modern bullet journals – especially the see-through plastic covers so you can create your own custom title page. Plus, with this budget-friendly two-pack, I use one notebook as scrap paper to test out doodles and bullet journal spreads before adding them to my other, official bullet journal planner for the year.

Erin Condren Coiled Notebook (Dot Grid Page Layout)

Erin Condren planners and notebooks are known for their quality, creativity and fun bonuses like stickers, and pairs perfectly with their other planner accessories like snap in bookmarks, checklists and sticky notes. This by far our reader’s favorite dot grid notebook.

I personally love to use this Rocketbook for course notes so I can save them, give the file a title and easily find them again later in Google Drive.

Best Bullet Journal Pens

Pilot G2 Premium Fine Point Pens

Call me a pen snob – but Pilot G2 pens are simply the superior pen. These refillable, smooth writing, fine point pens that now come in lots of fun colors are perfect for bullet journaling, whether you’re outlining doodles or content boxes or filling in your lists and tasks for the week.

Pilot FriXion Erasable Fine Point Pens

Besides the G2 pens, I regularly use these erasable pens for things like events or tasks that might get moved around or canceled or when I’m trying to squeeze a long quote into a certain amount of space on a monthly spread – sometimes you gotta erase and try again! I’m always shocked at how flawlessly these pens erase and don’t leave any smudges.

Best Markers For Bullet Journaling

Zebra Pen Mildliner Double Ended Highlighters

I like to use these mild highlighters to shade small areas or accent text or titles. The one thing I will say is, I was surprised just how light they are. So, they’re not perfect for every situation but I do like having them in my bujo kit.

Choose a pack or roll that matches the overall theme of your journal whether that’s nature, muted tones, bright neon colors, or maybe something more modern or elegant. It’s also great to get a mix of patterned and solid color washi tape rolls to use throughout your bullet journal or mix and match as you go.
